Summary: Early M48 Pattons used a Continental AV1790 air-cooled gasoline V12 and were plagued by persistent engine, transmission, track and suspension problems, with a combat range of 135 miles. From the M48A3 onward, the tank switched to a twin-turbocharged Continental AVDS-1790 diesel, raising combat range to 288 miles, though maintenance remained problematic.
