On March 21, 1984, the Soviet nuclear attack submarine K-314 surfaced almost directly beneath the U.S. supercarrier USS Kitty Hawk in the Sea of Japan during Team Spirit '84. Both vessels survived, and each side blamed the other as pieces of the submarine stuck to the carrier’s hull.
