Knoxville Seeks More Winter Warming Centers
By The BriefBrief
The Knoxville-Knox County Office of Housing Stability is asking churches and community groups to help expand warming-center capacity before winter. Executive Director Erin Read said the unhoused population has grown 70% since 2018 while shelter beds have not kept pace; several people died of hypothermia last winter. A recent arson fire damaged North Knoxville Baptist Church, which had planned to open its gym as a warming center.
WHO: The Knoxville-Knox County Office of Housing Stability, churches and community organizations, and North Knoxville Baptist Church.
WHAT: The Office of Housing Stability is appealing for help expanding Knoxville’s warming-center capacity ahead of winter.
WHEN: Reported Oct 22, 2026 at 7:34 AM ET
WHERE: Knoxville, Tennessee
WHY: Read said the city lacks enough shelter beds for its growing unhoused population, and warm shelter during extreme cold can help prevent deaths from hypothermia.
