Study links more than 32,000 European heat deaths to climate change
By The BriefBrief
A study published in Nature Health estimated that extreme heat contributed to more than 50,000 deaths across Europe during the summer of 2026, the continent’s deadliest summer on record. Researchers attributed more than 32,000 excess deaths—about two-thirds of the total—to climate change intensifying the heat. In UK urban areas, they estimated about 4,500 excess deaths, including 2,500 linked to more severe heatwaves.
