Summary: A frigate commanded by Cmdr. Paul Rinn was escorting reflagged Kuwaiti tankers when a lookout spotted mines in the water. A blast from an Iranian M-08 contact mine laid in 1908 broke the ship’s keel, flooded the engine room, knocked out both gas turbines, and disabled halon fire suppression, requiring hand-started generator power to fight fires for about five hours.
