F-14 Tomcat engine mismatch traced to TF30 use

Filed: Sep 26, 2026 at 10:02 AM ET
Summary: The F-14 Tomcat’s early TF30 engines, sourced from the F-111, were not optimized for the fighter’s high-angle-of-attack dogfight maneuvers, leading to compressor stalls. Because the engines were spaced about nine feet apart, a stall could yaw the jet into a flat spin. The later swap to the GE F110-GE-400 improved climb rate and intercept performance.
WHO: Pratt & Whitney TF30; General Electric F110-GE-400
WHAT: Early F-14 Tomcats experienced compressor stalls and flat-spin risk due to using F-111 TF30 engines not suited to fighter maneuvering; later replaced by F110-GE-400.
WHEN: Sep 26, 2026 at 9:55 AM ET
WHERE: Location not specified
WHY: The TF30 was designed for the F-111’s smoother, straight airflow needs and was not built for the Tomcat’s hard turns at high angles of attack, contributing to compressor stalls.
How this brief is built: The BriefBrief uses multi-source information fusion to correlate reporting across sources, identify related developments, and continuously update a structured WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE and WHY event picture. Pattern arcs, source analysis, and velocity indicators provide deeper analysis in our MI Console.
