Summary: On January 17, 1966, a US Air Force B-52G Stratofortress collided with a KC-135 Stratotanker during aerial refueling near Palomares at about 31,000 feet. Both aircraft were destroyed and seven airmen died. Three thermonuclear bombs were recovered, but a fourth was lost in the Mediterranean, prompting an 80-day deep-ocean search that ultimately found it.
