Summary: The US Air Force sought a Mach 3 YF-12 interceptor by adapting the CIA’s A-12 into a high-altitude missile truck. Three AIM-47s were carried internally and the Hughes AN/ASG-18 radar was designed to detect targets below. The program was killed in 1968, and its radar and missile later supported the US Navy’s F-14 Tomcat for decades.
