US Navy reactivated four Iowa-class battleships

The US Navy brought four Iowa-class battleships back into service in the 1980s after decades in reserve, spending about $1.7 billion to counter a Soviet nuclear battlecruiser. A proposal to remove an aft 16-inch gun turret for a Harrier flight deck was not adopted; the ships instead received 32 Tomahawk and 16 Harpoon missiles. All four were out of service by 1992.
