Model suggests Sudan's 2025 death toll may near 100,000
By The BriefBrief · Sources (1)
Conflict researcher Paola Vesco and her team developed a model to account for fatalities missed by conflict datasets and estimate uncertainty in death tolls. Applied to Sudan, the approach suggests the 2025 toll could be as high as 100,000, far above one monitor's estimate of about 19,000 and consistent with other research topping 70,000.
WHO: Paola Vesco and her research team
WHAT: Developed a model to estimate uncertainty and undercounting in conflict death tolls, including Sudan's 2025 toll.
WHEN: 2026
WHERE: Sudan
WHY: Conflict casualty datasets can underestimate fatalities, while communications cuts and blocked humanitarian access made deaths in Sudan difficult to establish.
How this brief is built: The BriefBrief uses multi-source information fusion to correlate reporting across sources, identify related developments, and continuously update a structured WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE and WHY event picture. Pattern arcs, source analysis, and velocity indicators provide deeper analysis in our MI Console.
