Vienna and Beijing teams develop nuclear clocks

Separate research teams in Vienna and Beijing have created the first two operating nuclear clocks, based on thorium-229 trapped in calcium fluoride crystals. The devices are not yet more accurate than the best conventional atomic clocks, but researchers say they could eventually aid satellite navigation, data synchronization and fundamental-physics research.
